Mother’s day can flitter away with the clock change as we mount praise and admiration on the mothers around us. We tell our friends, sisters, cousins, our own mothers, how wonderful they are but rarely ourselves.
This Mother’s Day I ask you to remember yourself, to say thank you to the mother you see in the mirror every morning. Even better, find some time, a quiet corner and write a letter to yourself. Begin with thanking yourself, “Thank you, Mama”, and see where it brings you.
I have no doubt that you will see the truly beautiful, kind, supportive and wonderful mother you are.
Thank You For Always Being There
For every plastered knee, kiss on the forehead, and warm hug when only a Mama squeeze will do. For knowing what is needed before anyone asks, for seeing the danger and jumping to action, and for stepping outside of your comfort zone. For knowing the right thing to say, for being on time or late because truly it doesn’t matter since you always show up, and for putting yourself first because you know you matter too. Thank you for always being there even when you are exhausted, frustrated, or overwhelmed.
Thank You For All Of The Watering and Feeding
For knowing which ice pops are the best, for the afternoon snacks, and the Sunday treats. For making pancakes on Pancake Tuesday, for baking with flour dust floating through the air, and buying a sneaky Mcdonald’s. For the homemade guacamole, the glazed ham at Christmas, and the random dinners of cheese, chicken pieces and breadsticks. Thank you for all of the watering and feeding, the small family meals, and the big family occasions.
Thank You For Finding The Missing Toys, The School Tie, And The Right Answer
For pulling together a last-minute World Book Day outfit, for searching the entire house for the favourite teddy who simply has to be tucked in at bedtime, and for tying shoelace after shoelace for more years than imaginable. For knowing what to say when there are really no words, for answering all of the awkward questions, and for the quiet moments when a presence is all that’s needed. Thank you for finding the missing toys, the school tie, and the right answer. For guiding, teaching, and making mistakes along the way.
Thank You For Your Sacrifices
For spreading yourself, your time, your energy, and your thoughts. For beginning a new life when motherhood came along, for taking your time to evolve, change, and grow, and for battling the questions you were afraid to ask. Thank you for your sacrifices, and for knowing that the time and space you give is not forever, that boundaries can be created and maintained and dreams pursued.
Thank You For Laughing, Dancing, and Listening
For the tickle fights and knowing when to stop, for the kitchen discos and dancing instead of sitting and watching, and for laughing too when Alexa farts a long and squishy one. For reading books and making up stories, for building the best forts, and playing hopscotch on the hottest day of the year. Thank you for laughing, dancing, and listening. For hearing worries and fears that may seem trivial but most certainly are not, for pausing and holding hands, and for smiling a knowing smile that makes your eyes sparkle and suddenly everything is ok again.
Thank You For The Magic And The Dreams
For chasing the fairies, making daisy chains, and planting flowers. For making mud pies and stocking up the mud kitchen with old spoons and the broken whisk that is perfect for making potions. For the thousands of tuff tray ideas, for pretending the trampoline is a washing machine and bouncing as high as you could, and for painting rocks, shells, and picking lavender. Thank you for the magic and the dreams, for all of the memories that will never fade.
Thank You For Filling Out The Forms, Making The Appointments, and Saying Yes
For managing the life admin no one will ever know about, for doing the big shop, and keeping yourself healthy with checkups. For organising the school photos, the year after year birthday parties - always better than the last - and for knowing what is around the corner. Thank you for filling out the forms, making the appointments, and saying yes when a no is expected.
Thank You For Being You
For being so unique that there will never be another mother like you, for being the best Mama in the world because you truly are, and for knowing how important, wonderful, and loved you are. Thank you for being you. Thank you, Mama.
